Cloudy Day

by Don James

“I wander city streets, wading through layers of chaos, to study a world of orderly structures, reflections and interplay of light and shadow. I surround myself with architectural history, evolution and revolution. Each of my subjects has its own personality, with examples of craftsmanship and engineering prowess that are elegant, powerful and endlessly fascinating. The architect creates a finished work, but also provides the raw material for my own expression. To me, a building is a musical composition that I am allowed to “perform”, creating my own arrangement and interpretation of the work. My goal is to amplify the impact of the whole by revealing the structure and interplay of the parts. I use weather, the time of day and even the time of year as tools to deliver the light to greatest effect. I do minimal post-processing, comparable to the manipulations performed in a traditional darkroom. It is important to me to create an honest representation of the architect’s work.”
