Wake
by Hoagy Scoins
“This is a small, quickly painted acrylic. Given the theme of light and dark, I underpainted with bands of colour representing the visible light spectrum. "Wake", at its most obvious, refers to the ship's wake; I wanted as well to contrast the ugly shape of the body with the beauty of nature, but my primary intent though was to reflect upon mental illness, which can make any place seem dark, and make strange decisions (such as leaping into the ocean from a moving ship) not only logical but inevitable.”
