Matthew Anderschat is Azerbaijani-American photographer from Silver Spring, Maryland. Born in Moscow, Russia he was adopted at the age of three and raised in a mixed American and Russian cultural context. He began working with photography in 2021 and graduated with a BFA from MICA’s photography program in 2025. His practice bridges digital and analog photography and he has a special passion for historic processes including silver-gelatin printing, palladium, and daguerreotypy. His current work explores identity and culture in the Caucasus region. Most recently, he traveled throughout the country Georgia as a recipient of the Jan Meyer Traveling Grant, creating a body of work that seeks to explore and elevate the diverse people and cultures of the country. He will be traveling to Azerbaijan in May 2026 to continue this project in the region.
