The Sanctuary of One

Inspired from an early age by the Group of Seven, Alex Colville and Canadian folk art, Mark Sajatovich discovered a life-long interest in color, line and composition that led to an exploration of abstract expressionism and the discovery of Kandinsky, Albers, Dubuffet and Kline. Together, these influences eventually resulted in the production of a series of post-covid works that blended aspects of geometric abstraction with modern gothic-inspired elements. Paintings that captured his observations on social and environmental challenges. Today, his works interpret the evolution of society through creative uses of color and lines. His paintings combines the motion of abstract expressionism with the authenticity of art brut and the strength of geometric abstraction. More recent works by Sajatovich have successfully forged a style of contemporary art that is guided by a belief in the canvas as a conduit for self-exploration as well as artistic expression. His work calls upon the viewer to engage with the pieces not as finished objects but as sites of exploration, where texture, color, and form come together to generate new meanings and promote contemplation. At the heart of his artistic philosophy lies a deep appreciation for the authenticity and the growing capacity of abstract and art brut to challenge traditional perspectives, provoke courageous interpretations and inspire honest reflection.
