A Couple, Rangtang

“This oil painting was created following my time providing legal aid in Rangtang County, a Tibetan region in western China. I met this couple inside a small local restaurant, where conversations about contracts and community matters unfolded in the midst of everyday life. Although I arrived in Rangtang in a professional capacity, I was struck by the quiet dignity and steadiness with which they carried themselves. The patterned wallpaper and warm interior light of the restaurant became an important part of the composition, grounding the portrait in a lived, shared public space rather than a staged setting. Working in oil allowed me to explore warmth, texture, and layered surfaces—the folds of heavy garments, the weathered quality of skin shaped by altitude and time. Rather than presenting them as subjects of documentation, I sought to capture a moment of presence: two individuals inhabiting their world with composure and subtle strength.”
