Tom No. 1

by Steven Myers

“My current work originates from a hand-drawn stippled portrait, reproduced on vellum and mounted on a card stock background of various designs. The final piece is mounted on media board for presentation. The transparency of the vellum introduces a shifting interplay of light, pattern, and depth, softening the precision of the stippling while simultaneously disrupting it with the layered background rhythms. The result is an image suspended between presence and obscurity, where detail emerges and recedes depending on perspective. By combining exacting mark-making with the material qualities of layered surfaces, the pieces explore the tension between clarity and obscurity, permanence and fragility.”
