“It's all about the line. At Syracuse University I painted cut wood shapes layered and large with subject matter on where we live and objects that surround us. Working later, making wood into flat surfaces with edges as the contour of the objects. Over the years the shapes needed definition and got glued into place and fit into a rectangular format. My more matured art emphasizes the line as painted on top of the flat surfaces. With the same visual vocabulary of my youth of taking subject matter and blowing it up into abstraction then breaking it down into bold forms, retaining only the most important line and color hints. I sand, carve, scar the surface harshly leaving raw grain of the wood exposed and vulnerable, other areas thick with paint glazes, wax and varnishes create sensitivity in built up painted areas. My paintings have taken on new confidence in their flat rectangular framed format and the title helps instruct the viewer to share in my line’s deliberate simple boldness.”
