MetaArt: Evolution
by Lee Ann Heltzel
Lee Ann Heltzel Most paintings are made. Mine are received. MetaArt is a genre of intuitive, frequency-based abstract painting created through deep meditation. I act as a channel, not a designer. I do not approach the canvas until I perceive the next layer — a discipline that ensures what emerges is guided by something beyond thought. The result is work with a distinct energetic frequency, built in layers over weeks or months. MetaArt sits at the crossroads of visual art, contemplative practice, and consciousness studies. Research in neuroaesthetics shows that complex imagery activates the Default Mode Network — a system linked to introspection, imagination, and self-awareness — while inducing alpha and theta brainwave states typical of deep meditation. MetaArt works precisely in this space. Viewers engage through Ocular Meditation™, an eyes-open practice rooted in Trataka. Rather than withdrawing, they soften their gaze and let sight quiet the mind — opening receptive states long cultivated by contemplative traditions and now increasingly measurable through neuroscience. The paintings do not instruct or impose meaning. They function as mirrors reflecting back something the viewer already carries but may not yet be able to name. My practice is rooted in thirty years as a death doula. At the edge of life, I saw art reach people when words, medicine, and love fell short. Visual perception offers a direct path to awareness beyond language. Evolution is permanently installed at Sonic Serenity Healing in Carmichaels, Pennsylvania — created in response to a channeled transmission from the threshold between life and death, accompanied by sacred sound by Dovida Goodman. I exhibit and offer retreats at Evolutionary Minded Wellness in Etna, Pennsylvania. I am a 2026 Artist-in-Residence at the Chautauqua Institution School of Art, a 2024 MvVO Art Award winner, a Silver Pencil winner at The One Show, a 2024 artist-in-residence at Lily Dale Assembly, and Co-Founder of Millions Meditating.
