Binding

“My work explores the body as a surface shaped by tension, control, and vulnerability. I am interested in how an image can be physically altered so that it no longer functions only as representation, but begins to carry the sensation it refers to. In Binding, a photographic image is interrupted through the use of thread, which is stretched, knotted, and fixed across the surface. This intervention introduces lines of pressure that pull the image inward, creating a sense of constraint and instability. The body is partially obscured and held in place, as if caught between exposure and concealment. The thread operates both as material and as action. It does not decorate the image, but actively disrupts it, shifting the work from a flat surface into a tactile object. The intervention transforms the image into something that suggests touch, resistance, and restriction. What is depicted is no longer distant or purely visual, but begins to exist as a physical condition. I am interested in how the act of binding can function as a form of inscription. The body becomes a site where pressure accumulates, where external forces leave traces that cannot be easily undone. At the same time, the thread holds the image together, creating a fragile balance between control and collapse. Through this work, material becomes a form of language. Rather than illustrating an idea, the tension is embedded directly into the surface, where the image exists between fragility and force, containment and release.”
