For Love/For Lack

by Marlaina Schiman

Based in Philadelphia, Marlaina Schiman is an oil painter and fine artist. She studied at both Temple and Rowan University, earning her B.F.A at the latter. Working predominantly figuratively, her pieces show themes of intimacy, alienation, and liberation, focusing on individual subjects juxtaposed against themselves or parts of themselves, frequently in indistinct and liminal spaces. She is fascinated by the effects of transparency, playing with light and shadow, and experimenting with trends from art history. She is currently working on a body of work about body image issues, eating disorders, sexual trauma, and gender socialization.
