Eden Ewardson

Eden Ewardson is a multidisciplinary artist and filmmaker whose practice spans painting, drawing, comics, stop-motion, animation, installation, and film. Born into a creative household—his father a director and photographer, his mother a producer—Eden began drawing at age three and never stopped. Early experiments in painting, doodling, and comics grew into a fascination with storytelling. By sixteen, he was producing short films with friends, directing three short films and a mid-length feature, and exploring animation, which remains one of his favorite mediums.

He studied at Yangon Film School (YFS), Germany’s renowned documentary film program with a base in Yangon, focusing on sound design and animation. At YFS he expanded his technical skills, networks, and artistic perspective, meeting senior artists who introduced him to performance and installation art as well as art history. This encounter marked the beginning of his life as a contemporary artist.

Ewardson’s practice is driven by curiosity and emotion. Influenced by Picasso, Warhol, and Kandinsky, he moves freely across styles—scribbles, pop art, modernism, traditional and digital forms—refusing to confine himself to a single genre. Warhol’s color structures and Picasso’s constant reinvention continue to guide his explorations. He works intuitively, often creating two or three pieces a day, using art as both outlet and anchor.

Personal experience deeply informs his work. His painting Thinner reflects his time battling tuberculosis, when illness left him physically drained and emotionally vulnerable. Recent projects include experimenting with AI in avant-garde ways, such as a graphic novel that treats AI as a kind of actor. Despite the challenges of creating art during Burma’s civil war, he remains committed: “No matter what happens or where I am, I won’t stop doing art.”

Looking ahead, Ewardson hopes to bring his installations to broader audiences—digitally if not physically—and to continue developing as a pioneer in contemporary art, carving a space that is uniquely his own.
