The Offering
by Rachel York
“My work often deals with the intersection of the spiritual and the material, that which is both visible and invisible. This series sprang from an increasing interest in Vanitas paintings, the work of Antonio Lopez Garcia, and the overflowing bowls of odd-looking fruit and vegetables from our backyard garden. Forms I have delighted in every day the past few months. Beginning with a process of digital collage my works evolve as I paint. Objects, and spaces, materialize or disappear. Blurring genres between expressionist still life, and landscape, these scenes are invented, impossible and gesture towards that which is artificial. In a time when we are disparate from nature, in which reality is often considered to be a matter of perspective it seems impossible to paint directly from life. Instead, I piece together images from the past, weaving light filled scenes amidst ambiguous dark fields.”
