Remember the Future
by Amuri Morris
Amuri Morris aims to show how western culture has tended to negate and undermine the place of black figures, not only in daily life but also in visual media and stories told. She aims to explore this displacement by forging reimagined spaces that break free from imposed identities, to create space for “the black protagonist” in western backdrops. Her paintings create a fantastical fruitfulness that gratifies Amuri’s inner child (and the imagery she desired to see). The intersection between the past, present, and altered spaces all pull together to varying degrees in her work. Her afro-centric reimagining generates an alternative history that also thinks reflectively about displacement and the biases of histories.
