Knight & Knave
by Emily Klassen
“This painting presents myself, done up and undone, as the titular foils of the Knights and Knaves puzzle— one who only speaks the truth, and one who always lies. The knight refuses eye contact, either from naked shame or her enraptured, unbroken focus on the knave. Lying is a freedom she covets. Staring straight at the viewer, the knave dares you to question her honesty. After all, is she not beautiful? Is she not more deserving of love? Is she not real? Depends who you’re asking.
