Dinner Conversation (Detail)
by Anissa White
“My artwork serves as a visual narrative that encourages reflection on topics often considered taboo. I employ a variety of mediums as conduits for social justice; shedding light on issues such as women’s healthcare, sexual assault, and gender stereotypes. Much of my work draws inspiration from designs, patterns, and motifs found in antique dinnerware and portraiture. Through the layering colors and use of both classical, and modern techniques, I create a sense of elegance and nostalgia that warmly invites viewers to engage more deeply with the imagery. My work stimulates communal discussion around sensitive subjects, breaks down barriers of silence, and prompts empathetic engagement. Through participating in these conversations we celebrate the strength, resilience, and complexity of people's experiences, challenge societal expectations, and foster a sense of community and empowerment.”
