Freja Jiahui Ye is a London-based interdisciplinary artist. Her practice consistently revolves around the materialisation of the immaterial, working through sculpture, installation, performance, and sound to construct tension-filled immersive environments. In her practice, she has developed a compelling artistic language that constructs environments functioning as metaphors for ecological tipping points, palliative breakdown, and entropy. Her work draws on a wide range of knowledge systems, including nature, philosophy, craft traditions, science, folklore, mythology, religion, and politics. Through the use of unstable, porous, and “unruly” materials such as crystallisation, soil, moss, flowing water, rusted metal, and weaving, she deliberately disrupts the constructed binaries of modernity between nature and culture, order and chaos, civilisation and wilderness. Her practice reveals what lies beneath polished surfaces: residues of the past, unspoken desires, collective anxieties, and latent social fragilities. Her recent research explores how the five senses are subtly and unconsciously regulated and manipulated within social structures to shape human behaviour, and how these invisible forces construct bodily experience and collective consciousness. Freja understands her works as vessels for storing and transforming energy. Her installations often exist in temporary or unfinished states, within which personal memory generates a shared language of imagination, unfurls as a living ritual, and lifts viewers/participants past the surface layers of their physical and spiritual being. By continuously blurring the boundaries between the organic and the industrial, the visible and the invisible, she creates spatial conditions that are both poetic and unsettling, inviting audiences to develop a deeper sensory and emotional engagement with the world around them. Freja Jiahui Ye studied BA Fine Art at Goldsmiths, University of London. After graduating, she was awarded a position as a Selected Artist Participant in Germany and continued her study and practice at Hochschule für bildende Künste Hamburg, where she focused on sculpture and stage-oriented spatial practices. She has had several group exhibitions across the UK, Europe, and Asia.
