The Weight Of Presence

“For this Exhibition, my work explores 'Presence' as a psychological anchor. I am fascinated by the way a portrait can command a viewer's space, acting as a vessel for both the subject's inmediate reality and the lingering echoes of a memory. To translate this experience onto paper, I utilise a specialised watercolour methodology. I begin with an atmospheric wet-on-wet technique for the background, creating a fluid, dreamlike environment where edges are blurred and colours blend. This represents the 'feeling' of nostalgia-the hazy, non-linear nature of our inner landscape. Over this, I apply layered glazes and a sharp dry-brush method to pull the focal point into crystalline focus. In 'The Weight of Presence', I used deep indigo and blue-toned shadows to ground the skin-tones, creating a high contrast visual hierarchy. This contrast forces the viewer to reconcile the softness of the environment with the absolute clarity of the subject's gaze. My goal is to invite the viewer to slow down and find their own senses of stillness within the layers of pigment, acknowledging the beauty in the balance between what is lost to time and what remains vividly, undeniably present.”
