Portrait of an Artist's Dream

by Julie Ann Liefeld

Julie Ann Liefeld is a self-taught mixed media artist. Her pieces explore the tension between self-expression and cultural expectation, offering a dynamic reflection on individuality in the face of societal norms. As an academic living with a learning disability, Liefeld often centers her work on the emotional toll of masking...shedding light on the quiet grief that comes with trying to belong. Drawing from her dual roles as therapist and educator, she uses the artistic process as a vehicle for healing and connection. Through an ever-evolving blend of materials and techniques she aims to create work that is visually and emotionally resonant. Her pieces explore pain and growth, abstract elements of the human experience, and the beauty found in what is unexpected or even unaccepted. Through her expressive and experimental lens, she invites viewers to reflect on their own stories and the cultural forces that shape them. This piece focused in on the parts of the artist creative versus creating...often two distinct processes, struggle and gestalt.
