"Nuclear Waste: Mutant Creatures," investigates humanity's fears of the unknown and the repercussions of our actions on ecosystems through innovative fabric-making methods. The unpredictable effects of nuclear radiation, which transcend species boundaries, are explored in this collection. While current visible impacts are primarily observed in oceanic mutations, the potential for these effects to extend to humans and animals poses a future fraught with unforeseen consequences. Inspired by a Chinese nuclear radiation expert's research prior to the Fukushima disaster, Li's textile pieces merge unnatural elements with sea debris, creating hybrid forms such as “Skeletal Fish” - a bone fish with a human head. This dystopian collection serves as a cautionary tale about the perils of nuclear radiation and the anxieties surrounding mutant creatures. Through techniques like crochet, smocking, and machine knitting, she depicts a haunting marine environment filled with “Medusa Octopus” (octopus with snake heads), “Skeletal Fish” (human-bone fish), “Sea Glass Beaded Tropical Fish”, etc., awakening a sense of connection to the ocean and the planet. Ultimately, her work aims to provoke reflection on the implications of nuclear radiation while emphasizing the critical need to protect the natural world.
