Midnight Black Ice 1, “Echoes of Flame” and “Fire Dance”

by Manuela Oprea

“My work centers on sculptural ceramic vessels that explore the concept of fragility and strength. I create forms that dramatically twist and curve, rising and folding in ways that appear to defy gravity. Each piece is captured in a moment of near-tipping or bending, a state of tension where instability is held, not broken. The raku firing process is integral to the character of these vessels. The extreme thermal shock combined with heavy reduction atmosphere generates the distinctive metallic surfaces: iridescent blues transitioning into copper, silver and gold shifting with changes in light and perspective. This unpredictable dance between flame and clay produces unexpected beauty while the curves of the vessels lean into instability without collapsing.”
