Mask in the Spirit of Our Second Selves: consider the book by W.E.B. Dubious, printed in 1903, titled The Souls of Black Folk. In his book, Dubious describes the concept of the Negro people in the United States having "the individual sensation of feeling as though [our] identity is divided into several parts." Dubious referred to this as double consciousness.
