Self Portrait in Studio
by Carmen Schaefer
“As an artist, I am drawn to the expressive possibilities of black and white, as well as the dynamic use of color, on paper. My work combines elements of realism and impressionism, blending the two styles into something uniquely my own. I often begin with a realistic foundation, but as the piece evolves, it takes on a more expressive quality. I employ a variety of mark-making techniques to convey emotion and texture in my artwork. Bold brushstrokes and gestural lines, to delicate washes and intricate detailing, allow me to create dynamic compositions that captivate the viewer's eye and evoke a sense of movement and energy. Layering and texture are key elements of my artistic practice. I build depth and complexity in my artwork through successive layers of color, line, and texture, creating richly textured surfaces that invite viewers to explore the subtle nuances of my creations. I use shadows prominently in my work, allowing them to envelop isolated figures and barren landscapes”
