Fragments of Growth V
by Beth Coleman
“I am a Georgia-based multimedia artist. My work often reflects growth whether it be subjective or representational. I often use themes of natural renewal in my printmaking to parallel the growth I gain as an artist through the act of creation and play; often utilizing techniques that aim to challenge my skill level. I then repurpose and transform these discards of education through alternative practices such as collage, sewing, and papermaking to give the visual information generated throughout the learning process a second life. I am deeply interested in our natural world and its renewability. I imply elements of material renewal, often foraging or recycling the mediums I'm working with, considering ideas of sustainability. I take these ideas of personal growth and depict them through landscape and plant abstraction, creating worlds of new life in destruction. I find these worlds to be a reflection of the trauma I have experienced in my life and how I have grown around it.”
