Changes

by Jeni Bate

“My work is about sky. The sky is where we live – we just live there at ground level. It is the most important part of our world, without it there would be no life. My work aims to help us realize how small we are in the face of the sky, yet how it unites us all. I call my signature method “refracturing”. The term was recognized by the international magazine Kolaj in 2016. I paint each scene then cut and reassemble, juxtaposing pieces with a partially matched edge giving a mix of flow and clash. Stylistically this has been described as “somewhere between 3rd generation orphism and unclassifiable” – a great place to be until I try to explain it to a gallerist over the phone. When we look at a view, we don’t do so in its entirety, but focus on individual areas, so my method presents the art in the way the observer would process them”
