How to Photograph Your Artwork Professionally

Poor documentation can eliminate strong work from consideration.

1. Use Neutral Lighting

Natural indirect light works best.

Avoid:

  • Overhead yellow light

  • Harsh flash

  • Mixed lighting temperatures

2. Shoot Straight On

Your camera should be:

  • Centered

  • Parallel to the work

  • Level

Distortion weakens professionalism.

3. Crop Cleanly

Remove:

  • Wall edges

  • Frames (unless intentional)

  • Shadows

Let the work breathe.

4. Maintain Accurate Color

If possible:

  • Adjust white balance

  • Compare with original piece

Color inaccuracies can significantly impact evaluation.

5. Use Consistent Image Quality

All submitted images should:

  • Be similar resolution

  • Have similar lighting tone

  • Feel cohesive

Consistency signals professionalism.
