Izzy Poehlmann
Izzy Poehlmann (they/them) is a scenic artist and multimedia artist whose creative journey began at home. Raised in a family where art was central—Izzy’s mother came from a long line of artists and homeschooled them and their sibling with a strong emphasis on the arts—they grew up with space to experiment, learn, and flourish creatively. That early foundation continues to shape Izzy’s practice today.
In high school, Izzy discovered scenic art for theatre, a form that remains closest to their heart. “I can’t tell you how many times I’ve painted wood to look like wood,” Izzy says, “but I live for it every time.” Scenic art became their spark, leading them to pursue a BFA in Theatrical Design and Technology with a minor in Scenic Painting. Along the way, supportive professors and mentors played a pivotal role in nurturing their artistic growth.
While scenic art and acrylic painting form the core of their professional work, Izzy’s personal art embraces multimedia play. Paint pens, watercolor, gouache, charcoal, colored pencils, collage—even repurposed fragments of their own past work—come together in layered, textural pieces. This process, Izzy explains, is a kind of meditation: a way to move thoughts and feelings out of the mind and into the world in a healthy, creative form.
For Izzy, art is first and foremost for the artist. Their hope is that their work encourages others to embrace creativity without fear of judgment or failure. “You may not be the next Bob Ross,” Izzy says, “but if you’re having fun creating and expressing yourself, that’s all that matters. Art is food for the soul.”
Currently, Izzy continues to balance professional scenic art projects with personal multimedia explorations, always guided by the belief that creative expression is essential. Their work can be followed on Instagram at @scenic_izzy, where ongoing projects and new ventures are shared.
Izzy credits their professors, mentors, colleagues, friends, and family for their ongoing support, noting that their creative path has always been shaped by community as much as by individual passion.
